This is the most common and important question we receive. The goal of this surgery at our clinic is never to Westernize your appearance. A well-executed double eyelid surgery simply enhances the natural beauty of your eye shape by creating a crisp fold, making your eyes look brighter and slightly more awake. The crease is designed specifically to harmonize with your inherent facial proportions so that you still look exactly like you—just beautifully refreshed.
The epicanthal fold is the web of skin that covers the inner corner of the eye, which is very common in Asian anatomy. If you have a very strong epicanthal fold, it can cause the new double eyelid crease to look unnatural or rounded at the inner corner. An epicanthoplasty is a complementary, adjunct procedure that releases this small web of skin, elongates the eye horizontally, allows the new crease to flow beautifully.
The height and shape of the crease (whether it is a tapered crease that meets the inner corner of the eye, or a parallel crease that sits slightly above it) is entirely customized and meticulously planned before your surgery. During your consultation, we temporarily fold your eyelid skin, allowing you to preview different crease heights. We will help you select the exact height and shape that best complements your facial structure.
You can expect swelling and mild bruising for the first week. You will need to rest with your head elevated and diligently apply cold compresses. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within 7 to 10 days. You can safely resume wearing eye makeup and using gentle makeup removers around 10 to 14 days post-op, once the incisions have completely sealed.
Your eyelids will be swollen and slightly stiff after surgery. Pulling on them to insert contacts can disrupt the healing tissue and introduce bacteria. You must wear glasses for the first 1 to 2 weeks following surgery. Once our team clears you at your follow-up appointment, you can safely resume wearing contact lenses.
