The ideal candidate for submental liposuction has a stubborn pocket of fat under the chin but retains excellent skin elasticity. If your skin is tight and resilient, it will naturally "shrink-wrap" beautifully around your newly sculpted jawline once the fat is removed. If you have significant loose, crepey, or hanging skin (often called a "turkey neck"), removing the fat will only leave that skin looking deflated. In those cases, Drs. Mahoney and Yeung will recommend a neck lift to physically remove the excess skin and tighten the underlying muscles.
We strongly recommend submental liposuction for the vast majority of our patients. Liposuction is a precise, "one-and-done" surgical procedure that allows us to manually sculpt the exact contour you want in a single session, and the downtime is highly predictable. Injections, like Belkyra, require 2 to 4 separate treatment sessions spaced months apart. They can cause intense, highly visible swelling (often called a "bullfrog" appearance) that can last for weeks after each session, and the final results are less predictable than surgery.
The facial compression garment (chin strap) is arguably the most important part of your recovery. It dramatically reduces post-operative swelling and acts as an external mold, pressing your skin firmly against your newly sculpted jawline so it heals tightly and smoothly. You must wear this strap 24 hours a day for the first 7 days, and then at night while you sleep for an additional 3 weeks.
Yes! The fat cells that are suctioned out are permanently removed from your body and will not regenerate. However, if you gain a significant amount of weight in the future, the remaining fat cells in your neck and face can still expand. Maintaining a stable weight is the best way to protect your beautifully refined profile.
You will notice a dramatic improvement the moment you take your chin strap off for the first time. However, that is not your final result. The delicate tissues of the neck hold onto microscopic, deep swelling for quite some time. Your contour will continue to refine and "shrink-wrap" week by week, with your absolute final, crisply defined jawline fully emerging around 3 to 6 months post-op.
